Thanksgiving must be terrifying for turkeys. Genocide on a plate much? Sure looking at a turkey kind of freaks me out, but that’s why I’m not eating one this year (and also why I have a polymer clay robot turkey to head up this post instead of this guy, ahem).
Keep your conscience easy and adopt a turkey instead – sponsor a flock or a single turkey to help support a compassionate Thanksgiving.
The great, awesome, wonderful news is that you can have one gobbler of a tasty meal without the wishbone and icky act of stuffing a dead bird. A few vegan / veggie friendly recipes of particular note for your Thanksgiving feast – you may not eliminate meat from your meal altogether, but boy wouldn’t it be great to substitute at least a dish or two? :
- Savory mushroom and fennel bread pudding
- Thai red curry sweet potatoes
- The Veggie Table’s Thanksgiving menu
- NPR talks about a vegetarian Thanksgiving
- Robin’s Vegan Thanksgiving Feast
- Great tips for ‘veganizing’ your favorite Thanksgiving dishes
So what have you got cooking this year? I’m excited for my time in the kitchen this holiday season as we’ll have about 4-5 potluck-y type events to attend around Thanksgiving. The PERFECT time to try out something new and fun. Suggestions?

Unfortunately, I get dragged to a traditional Thanksgiving, dead bird and all. It’s distressing but I can’t think of a way out of it without alienating half my family.
