Ingredient spotlight: Field Roast Grain Meat Co.

Field Roast vegan sausages

Okay, okay – I get that the brand name ‘Field Roast Grain Meat Co.‘ may not exactly be making your mouth water right now.  But if you were in my kitchen when I was frying some up, it’d be a whole different story.

Behold the only pre-made vegan meat substitute (besides tofu) that I plan on allowing in our house.  Fantastic texture, amazing flavor and a super flexible addition to just about any vegan / veggie meal.

After reading about Field Roast products on a couple of other food blogs, my interest was piqued.  Porcini dijon cutlets, white truffle country pate, lentil sage thinly sliced sandwich roast…  now THAT’S my kind of vegan meat substitute.

A Father’s Day brunch shopping excursion at Whole Foods popped the Mexican Chipotle sausages in my  kitchen – 4 nice-sized sausage links for about $5.50 – and they were an instant hit.  One link was enough to slice and fry up for the whole family for breakfast, alongside garden fresh tomatoes, tofu scramble with veggies all topped with a slice of New Zealand cheddar.

We were so addicted that I added another sliced and pan fried link for dinner with some beautiful fresh rainbow chard (my favorite way to cook this type of green) and candied lime sweet potatoes for dinner.

Typically, I wouldn’t be on here recommending a pre-packaged food.  But wow… in a pinch or if you’re just looking for a new way to spice up a vegan  meal I cannot recommend these babies enough.  Very complex flavor levels, perfect texture (bet you $5 you could fool an omni) and a reasonable deal for the amount of yumminess packed in each purchase.
